Obituary of Harlan Ward Sneed

Harlan Ward Sneed Funeral services for H. Ward Sneed of Centralia, IL will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, January 18, 2011 at Memorial Park Cemetery Chapel in St. Louis, MO. Rev. Kenneth Sneed will officiate with interment in Memorial Park Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. the same day at First Baptist Church, 319 East 2nd Street in Centralia, IL. Mr. Sneed, 93, passed away Friday afternoon, January 14, 2011 at Troy Manor in Troy, MO. Born December 27, 1917 in Dahlgren, IL, he was the son of William C. and Ada Fisher Sneed. He was united in marriage on October 22, 1939 in Jacksonville, IL to Ruth Moxon. After 63 years of marriage, she preceded him in death on February 3, 2003 in Centralia, IL. On July 1, 2005, Mr. Sneed married Jeanne Winkleman in Centralia, and she survives. Mr. Sneed was an appliance distributor working in the late 1930s and early 40s in Mt. Vernon, IL for Featherstun Appliance. During WWII he was a civilian attached to the Army Air Corp in England, Ireland and Scotland as a trainer teaching airplane navigators to use the latest equipment. Following the war, he worked in St. Louis first for Artophone (later Philco) Corp. and then for Admiral Corp. as an appliance distributor selling home appliances to stores throughout Missouri and Illinois. Mr. Sneed and his family lived in St. Louis (Ferguson) from 1947 - 1985. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Ferguson where he served as a Deacon, Sunday school teacher and leader in many areas of the church. He was also a representative on the Ferguson City Council, and was named "Man of the Year". In 1985 he and Ruth moved to Centralia where he held many leadership positions at First Baptist Church and in the community, including starting a food pantry for needy persons in the area. He was a member of the board at Huddleston Baptist Children's Home and a member of Rotary. Besides his wife, Ruth, Mr. Sneed was preceded in death by his parents, William and Ada Sneed, five sisters and four brothers. Survivors include his loving wife, Jeanne, of Centralia, IL; two sons, three daughters and one stepson: Jeanne Hamilton and husband, Ron, of Perrysburg, OH, Rev. Kenneth Sneed and wife, Diane, of Baton Rouge, LA, Marjorie Glenn and husband, Don, of Walnut Creek, CA, Carol Villalobos and husband, Isaac, of Ferguson, MO, James R. Sneed, D.D.S. and wife, Kathleen, of Foley, MO, and Richard Glenn and wife, Jobie, of Woodlawn, IL; eleven grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and one step-great-grandchild; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
