Obituary of Louis Wayne Chaney

Funeral Services for Louis Wayne Chaney of Troy, MO will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, June 14, 2014 at First Christian Church in Troy. Rev. Jim Turner of DeSoto, MO, Rev. Katherine Kinnamon, Interim Senior Pastor of First Christian Church, and Rev. Andrea Asselmeier, Associate Pastor of First Christian Church, will officiate. Serving as pallbearers will be Mark Chaney, Justin Chaney, Matthew Chaney, Thomas Chaney, Christopher Chaney and Benjamin Chaney. Mr. Chaney, 82, passed away early Tuesday morning, June 10, 2014 at St. Joseph Hospital West in Lake St. Louis, MO. Born December 17, 1931 in Puxico, MO, he was the son of Samuel Lee and Flora Lee Hawks Chaney. A 1949 graduate of Puxico High School, Louis played basketball for the fabled "Run-Shoot-Run" teams of Coach Arnold Ryan. He lettered in baseball and Basketball at William Jewel College in Liberty, MO, completing his Bachelor's Degree in Education. As a postgraduate, Louis completed his Specialist's Degree in Education at Washington University in St. Louis, MO. Louis was united in marriage on August 20, 1951 in Puxico to Lillian Estelle Ward. This union was blessed with four sons: Allen, Mark, Matt and Chris. Early in his career, Louis taught math and coached athletics in Piedmont and Desoto. From 1960 until he retired in 1988, he served as administrator of public schools in Potosi, Charleston, Elsberry and Hillsboro. A strong man of faith, Louis was a longtime Senior Deacon at the Hillsboro Baptist Church, and was currently serving as an Elder of the First Christian Church in Troy. He was a former member of the Rotary Club. He was also a member of the Missouri State Teachers Association, the Joachim Lodge # 164 AF&AM in Hillsboro, MO for a number of years and Scottish Rite, Valley of St. Louis. He was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel and Flora Chaney; and one son, Allen Chaney, who died in 1972. Survivors include his beloved wife of almost 63 years, Lillian Chaney of Troy; three sons: Chris Chaney and his close friend, Leah Askey, of Troy, Matt Chaney and his wife, Laura, of Warrensburg, MO and Mark Chaney and his wife, Kelly, of Troy; and seven loving grandchildren: Jessica, Justin, Madeline, Miranda, Ben, Thomas and Katelyn. He also leaves one brother, David "Corky" Chaney of Florissant, MO; one sister, Flora "Bay" Mansbridge of Fisk, Missouri; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Visitation will be held from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. Friday, June 13, 2014 at First Christian Church in Troy. Memorials may be made to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, St. Jude's (or) First Christian Church in care of Carter-Ricks Funeral Home, 107 S. 5th Street; Elsberry, MO 63343.
