Obituary of Doris Steward McKenzie

Doris Steward McKenzie Funeral Services for Doris Steward McKenzie of Elsberry, MO, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, October 4, 2012 at Carter-Ricks Funeral Home in Elsberry. Rev. Paul Garven, pastor of the Elsberry United Methodist Church, will officiate with burial in the Elsberry City Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Grant Steward, Drew Steward, Walter Pratt, Terry Shaw, Dale Hurley, Jim Ross and Chris Suddarth. Mrs. McKenzie, 89, passed away Sunday afternoon, September 30, 2012 at the Elsberry Health Care Center near Elsberry. Born September 9, 1923 in Effingham, IL, she was the daughter of Samuel H. and Marie A. Garrison Smith. She was a graduate of Terre Haute High School in Terre Haute, IN, and earned an Associates Degree at Terre Haute Commercial College where she was a member of the Alpha Chi Sorority. She was united in marriage on November 6, 1942 in Terre Haute to John William "Jack" Steward. This union was blessed with two children, John Samuel and Karen Marie. The Steward family moved to Elsberry in 1947. After serving the community as City Marshall for 25 years, Jack died in the spring of 1975. Doris later married Jack McKenzie and he also preceded her in death. She was employed for many years as the office manager for Missouri Edison (Ameren UE), retiring in 1988. After retirement, she loved to travel and most of all, be a Grandma. Doris was a longtime member of the First Christian Church in Elsberry. She was a former member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Study Club and Jesse Black Club. She was preceded in death by her parents, Sam and Marie Smith; her beloved husband of 32 years, Jack Steward who died April 20, 1975; and her second husband, Jack McKenzie. Survivors include one son, Sam Steward and his wife, Joy of Ballwin, MO; one daughter, Karen Green and her husband, Richard, of Elsberry; five grandchildren: Darcy Cheek and her husband, Lee of Pittsburgh, PA, Drew Steward of Wentzville, MO, Grant Steward of Ballwin, MO, Anna O'Neal of Manchester, MO, and Amy Dickerson and her husband, Matt, also of Manchester. She also leaves six great-grandchildren: Ethan and Leah Cheek, Alex and Emma Steward, Lukas O'Neal and Jacob Dickerson; several other relatives and many friends. Visitation will be held from 12:00 noon until time of the service at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, October 4, 2012 at Carter-Ricks Funeral Home in Elsberry.
