Obituary of Virginia Smith

Funeral services for Virginia Lee Smith of Indianapolis, IN, formerly of Elsberry, MO will be held at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 23, 2008 at Carter-Ricks Funeral Home in Elsberry. Rev. Lee Edwards, pastor of Grain Valley Christian Church in Grain Valley, MO, will officiate with burial in the Elsberry City Cemetery in Elsberry. Serving as pallbearers will be Christopher Scott, Mike Flynn, Bijan Jabbari, JoEllen LaRue, Jack LaRue and Steve Peacher. Mrs. Smith, 92, died Saturday evening, January 19, 2008 at Rosegate in Indianapolis. Born August 18, 1915 in Mexico, MO, she was the daughter of John Hammond and Elizabeth Frances Richards Whitmore. She was a 1933 graduate of Paynesville High School in Paynesville, MO. She was united in marriage on June 3, 1933 in Alton, IL to Jess Ray Brumagin. This union of 37 years was blessed with four children: Marian, Gay, JoEllen and David. Virginia joined the Elsberry Methodist Church in 1947 and served as a Sunday school teacher. She was a member of the Women's Service Guild and was involved with other church committees. She was well known for her home made pies. She was a member of the Jessie Black Club and assisted in Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts as well. Affectionately known as "Mrs. B", she worked as a teacher's aid in the Elsberry R-II elementary school from 1967-1977. On June 15, 1977, she married Kenneth Simon Smith and lived in Greenville, IL until September, 1986. She then moved to Blue Springs, MO to be near her son, David. While in Blue Springs, she joined the First United Methodist Church and enjoyed traveling with friends. In June, 2002 she moved to Indianapolis, IN to live with her daughter, Gay. In July, 2007 she became a resident of Rosegate in Indianapolis. Virginia was a kind, loving and gentle women. Compassionate and giving, she was a blessing to all who knew her and will be greatly missed. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Elizabeth Whitmore; one brother, Joe Whitmore; two daughters: JoEllen Brumagin on February 13, 1970 and Marian LaRue on September 14, 2004; and her husband, Kenneth Smith. Survivors include one son, David Brumagin and his wife, Leslie, of Blue Springs, MO; one daughter, Gay Jabbari of Indianapolis, IN; her grandson, Bijan Jabbari and his wife, Sarah, and their son, Ethan of Indianapolis; her granddaughter, Jila Jabbari of Indianapolis; her grandson, Chad LaRue and his wife, Amparo and their children, Sophia and Matthew of Phoenix, AZ; her granddaughter, Jo LaRue and her son, Jordan of Kirkwood, MO; her grandson, David R. Brumagin of Naples, FL; and her granddaughter, Emily Brumagin of Blue Springs. She also leaves her son-in-law, Jack LaRue of Kirkwood; her life-long friend, Doris Reid of Elsberry; several nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. until time of the service at Carter-Ricks Funeral Home in Elsberry.
