Obituary of Alexander Sutton Alloway

Frances Alexander Sutton Alloway Funeral services for Frances Alexander Sutton Alloway of Hannibal, MO, formerly of Elsberry, MO will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 6, 2007 at the First Christian Church in Elsberry. Rev. Tom Schofield, pastor of the First Christian Church, will officiate with burial in the Elsberry City Cemetery near Elsberry. Serving as pallbearers will be Willie H. Williams, Bryan D. Johnson, Wayne Pflasterer, Richard Green, Raymond Momphard and Tim Costello. Mrs. Alloway, 98, died Friday afternoon, November 2, 2007 at Luther Manor in Hannibal, MO. Born December 29, 1908 in Fort Supply, OK, she was one of nine children born to John William and Spicy Ann Burnham Farrell Alexander. Following her mother's death she was sent to live with two very loving aunts: Jennie and Harriet Farrell. While living in Columbia she graduated from Hickman High School and the University of Missouri with a Bachelor of Science in Education with an emphasis on Home Economics. While in college she was employed for the USDA. She was later employed by Union Electric where she was involved in buying property for the development of the Lake of the Ozarks. One of her early teaching challenges was at Kirksville School of Osteopathy where she designed and taught the first course of study in dietetics for the doctors in training. She was united in marriage on June 6, 1931 to Dr. Frank Luther Sutton in Columbia, MO. This union was blessed with three children: John Lee, James Farrell and Frances Anne. He preceded her in death on April 17, 1960. She was married again on July 14, 1965 in Elsberry to John Redd Alloway. She taught home economics at Versailles, MO and later taught at Elsberry for 21 years, retiring in 1970. Frances was proud to be a supervising teacher for student teachers at the University of Missouri. She was involved in the Missouri Teachers Association and the Missouri Retired Teachers Association. She was an active member of the DAR until her heath failed her. She was a member of the Elsberry First Christian Church. Frances was a life long lover of the arts, poetry and music. She was locally known for her oil paintings and watercolor mediums. She was an avid gardener. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Spicy Alexander; her first husband, Dr. Frank Sutton; four brothers: Joe Alexander, John Alexander, Tom Alexander and Emmett Alexander; two sisters: Lucille Porter and Jennie Alexander; two infant siblings; two aunts: Jennie Farrell and Harriet Farrell; one grandson, Kenny Rodgers; one son-in-law, Conrad Rodgers; and her second husband of 17 years, John Alloway. Survivors include two sons: John Sutton and his wife, Judy, of Cedar Hill, MO, James Sutton and his wife, Myra, of Hannibal; one daughter, Anne Rodgers of Oklahoma City, OK; two granddaughters: Amy D. Johnson and her husband, Bryan of Hannibal and Beth Williams and her husband, Willie, of Edmond, OK; several great-grandchildren; two nephews, other relatives, and friends. Visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00 p.m., Monday, November 5, 2007 at Carter-Ricks Funeral Home in Elsberry.
