Carter-Ricks Funeral Homes Phone 573-898-2181 / Fax 573-898-3148 Newspaper Notice of Death Mildred Mary Fakes Funeral Services for Mildred Mary Fakes of Elsberry, MO were held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, November 7, 2005 at Star Hope Baptist Church near Elsberry, MO. Rev. Bruce Walker of Silex Baptist Church in Silex, MO and Rev. Bryan Fakes of Disciples of Christ Christian Church in St. Charles, MO officiated with burial in Star Hope Cemetery near Elsberry. Serving as pallbearers were: John Fakes, David Clay, Andrew Clay, Terry Green, John Wagner Fakes, Bryan Fakes and Rick Donnelly. Mrs. Fakes, 83, died early Thursday morning, November 3, 2005 at Elsberry Healthcare Center near Elsberry. Born August 15, 1922 near Hanston, KS, she was the daughter of John Walter and Daisy Frances (nee Hawkins) Salmans. She was the youngest of 13 children. Her mother preceded her in death shortly after giving birth. She was raised in her family home by her oldest sister, Lena Salmans German. She graduated Valedictorian in 1940 from Hanston High School in Hanson, KS. She was united in marriage on August 25, 1941 to Chester Ben Fakes in Dodge City, KS. This union was blessed with one daughter and three sons. She moved to Missouri as a young bride to be closer to her husband's family. She moved to Elsberry in 1950. She managed the West End Market from 1952 to 1963. She also worked for many years as a secretary for Lincoln County R-II School District, until retiring in 1984. She was very active in the First Baptist Church in Elsberry. She helped coordinate the church library, serving as the church librarian. She also taught Sunday school, served as church secretary, sang in the church choir, and assisted with piano accompaniment. In later years she and Chester joined the Silex Baptist Church and occasionally assisted with the music. She was a volunteer for Meals-on-Wheels, and a member of the Circle L Square Dance Club in Louisiana, MO and St. Peters Squares in St. Peters, MO. Mrs. Fakes was preceded in death by her parents, John Walter and Daisy Salmans; four brothers: Clarence Salmans, Everett Salmans, Ray Salmans, and Virgil Salmans; one sister, Lena German; and five siblings who passed away at birth. Survivors include her beloved husband of 64 years, Chester Fakes of Elsberry; one brother, Ernest J. Salmans and his wife Beulah, of Pratt, KS; one sister, Beulah Edmission and her husband, Bob, of Johnson, KS; one daughter, Sandra Adkins and her husband, Nick, of Peoria, IL; three sons: Leon Fakes, David Fakes and his wife, LaVerna and Wesley Fakes and his wife, Marcia, all of Elsberry. She is also survived by twelve grandchildren; twenty great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends Visitation was held from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. Sunday, November 6, 2005 at Carter-Ricks Funeral Home in Elsberry.
