Obituary of Lloyd William Powelson

Lloyd William Powelson, Sr. Funeral Services for Lloyd William Powelson, Sr. of Elsberry, MO will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 2, 2015 at Carter-Ricks Funeral Home in Elsberry. J. Larry Carter of Carter-Ricks Funeral Home and Dennis Hammack will officiate with burial in Elsberry City Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Michael Powelson, Michael R. Weitkamp, Bob Kindred, Zac Powelson, Dan Lambert and Andrew Smith. Honorary pallbearers will be Dennis Hammack and Dylan Weitkamp. Mr. Powelson, 92, passed away Monday morning, December 29, 2014 at St. Joseph Hospital West in Lake St. Louis, MO. Born September 2, 1922 in Southern Lincoln County, MO, he was the son of Job and Oma Mae Admire Powelson. The family lived in the Moscow Mills, MO area until 1938 when they moved to the Elsberry area. As a boy, Lloyd attended both the Creech and Keelstone schools. He joined the Highland Prairie Church as a boy and later moved his membership to the Elsberry Baptist Church in 1942 where he later served as Deacon. Lloyd was united in marriage on March 20, 1943 in Bowling Green, MO to Nellie Rose Hill of Foley, MO. This union was blessed with two children: Pamela Kay and Lloyd "Sonny" Powelson, Jr. Lloyd spent his life farming, first with his father and then with Sonny. He also drove a Standard Oil truck and a school bus. He was a former president of the Elsberry Special Road District. Lloyd's greatest joys were his family, grandchildren, friends and Cardinal ballgames. He was able to see the Cardinals play in all three of their stadiums. He was preceded in death by his parents, Job and Oma Powelson; two brothers and their wives: Melvin and Beatrice Powelson and James and Evelyn Powelson; two brothers-in-law: Henry Edward "Pokey" Hill and Dale Hill; one sister-in-law and her husband, Carl & Dorothy McQueen; and his beloved wife of 50 years, Nellie Powelson who died October 13, 1993. Survivors include his son, Lloyd "Sonny" Powelson, Jr. and his wife, Sandra, of Elsberry; his daughter, Pamela Kay Oliver of Moscow Mills; four grandchildren: Michael Powelson and his wife, Rhonda, of Elsberry, Julie Weitkamp and her husband, Mike, of Troy, MO, Heidi Powelson of Elsberry and Sheri Smith of St. Peters, MO; and three great-grandsons: Zac Powelson of Maryville, MO, Dylan Weitkamp of Troy, MO and Andrew Smith of St. Charles, MO. He also leaves one brother, Kenneth Powelson of Arizona; two sisters-in-law: Mary Grace Hill of Elsberry and Ruby Hill of Foley; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Lloyd will be sadly missed and long remembered by all those who knew and loved him. Visitation will be held from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. Thursday, January 1, 2015 at Carter-Ricks Funeral Home in Elsberry.
