Obituary of Hoagland Van Scoyk

Hoagland H. Van Scoyk Funeral services for Hoagland H. "Hoagie" Van Scoyk of Elsberry, MO were held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, February 29, 2004 at the Elsberry First Baptist Church in Elsberry. Rev. Doug McGlaughlin of Troy, MO and Rev. Gary Barry, Interim pastor of the Elsberry First Baptist Church, officiated with burial in the Elsberry City Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were Marc Hill, Skip Trayner, Roy Dell LaBlanc, Richard Ray, Billy Ray, Dennis Hammack, Keith Palmer and Allen "Shorty" Siders; Honorary pallbearers were Edward "Pokey" Hill, David Colbert, Skip Palmer and Wayne Ray. Mr. Van Scoyk, 95, died Wednesday evening, February 25, 2004 at the home of his granddaughter, Tammy Burgess, in Elsberry. Born August 30, 1908 in Westfield, IL, he was the son of the late Harry C. and Lillie Snyder Van Scoyk. He was a 1927 graduate of Westfield High School in Westfield, IL and was the last surviving member of his class at the time of his death. He was united in marriage on November 11, 1934 in Urbana, IL to Margaret Alvina Ray. Mr. Van Scoyk worked in many occupations during his life including owning a restaurant, working as an electrician at the Wells Lamont Glove Factory in Elsberry, working in sales and service for the Petrolane Oil Co., and in electrical maintenance at the Babler State Park in southwestern St. Louis County. After he retired, he worked for several years at the Western Auto store in Elsberry. He served his community as an Elsberry City Alderman for six years. He was a member of the Elsberry First Baptist Church. Besides his parents Harry C. and Lillie Van Scoyk, he was preceded in death by two sisters: Dorothy Elliott and Margaret Gordon; and his beloved wife of almost 60 years, Margaret Van Scoyk, who died October 3, 1994. Survivors include two sons: Henry Eldon Van Scoyk and his wife, Kathy, of Hudson, FL, and Harry Samuel Van Scoyk of Elsberry; nine grandchildren: Gail Van Scoyk, Richard Van Scoyk, Scott Van Scoyk, Kimberly Steinhoff, Tammy Burgess, John Henry Van Scoyk, Samantha Tucker, Randall Van Scoyk and Charles Van Scoyk; and eleven great-grandchildren. He also leaves several in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends. Visitation was held from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. Saturday, February 28, 2004 at Carter-Ricks Funeral Home in Elsberry.
