Obituary of Alene Waddell

Alene Davis Waddell Funeral services for Alene Davis Waddell of Elsberry, MO were held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, February 1, 2004 at Carter-Ricks Funeral Home in Elsberry. Rev. Sue Jackson, pastor of Smith Chapel United Methodist Church, officiated with burial in Oak Ridge Cemetery near Elsberry. Serving as pallbearers were Joe Shipman, Charles Cohoon, Bob Davis, Terry Henry, Jim Noah, Bill Halley; honorary pallbearers were Preston Blackwell and Robert Watts. Mrs. Waddell, 92, died Thursday evening, January 29, 2004 at St. Joseph Hospital West in Lake St. Louis, MO. Born December 7, 1911 in Lincoln County, MO, she was the daughter of Alton Powell and Gertie Parks Davis. She was a 1929 graduate of Eolia High School in Eolia, MO. Following high school, she attended Culver-Stockton College, Kirksville State Teachers College, and finally Washington University where she received her Bachelors of Science Degree in Education. She was united in marriage on January 21, 1939 in Elsberry to George Edward "Peaches" Waddell. She began a 45 year teaching career at rural Hayes School and retired as a fifth grade teacher from the Elsberry School District in 1972. She was a former member of the ABC Club and a member of the Lincoln County Retired Teachers Association. She was also a member of Smith Chapel United Methodist Church where she taught the adult Sunday school class for 63 years. Besides her parents, Alton and Gertie Davis, she was preceded in death by one brother, Vernon Davis; and her beloved husband, George Waddell. Survivors include one sister, Velma Sanders of Elsberry; one sister-in-law, Anna Belle Davis of Eolia, MO; two nieces: Bobette Shipman and her husband, Joe, and Betty Cohoon and her husband, Charles, all of Elsberry; one nephew, Robert "Bob" Davis and his wife, Donna, of Eolia; several other relatives and friends. Visitation was held from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. Saturday, January 31, 2004 at Carter-Ricks Funeral Home in Elsberry.
