Earl Harm Groves Funeral services for Earl Harm Groves of Elsberry, MO were held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 2, 2003 at Carter-Ricks Funeral Home in Elsberry. Rev. Raymond Doussard officiated with burial in Elsberry City Cemetery. Mr. Groves, 96, died Saturday afternoon, June 28, 2003 at Elsberry Health Care Center near Elsberry. Born July 2, 1906 in Lincoln County near New Hope, MO, he was the son of Presley Marion and Cora Lee McGee Groves. He was united in marriage in 1940 in Troy, MO to Lorraine Ward. She preceded him in death on July 2, 1945. He was married again on January 28, 1947 in Pine Bluff, AR to Mabel Gertrude Resor Preston. Since 1929, he was self-employed as a grower and seller of produce. He was known for his produce stands at the stop sign in Elsberry. He was also employed as a laborer for Beauchamp Chicken Farm for 10 years. He was a member of the Elsberry First Baptist Church. Besides his father, Presley Groves, and his mother, Cora Lee McGuire, he was preceded in death by a half-brother, Lee Edward "Pete" McGuire; two sisters: Ethel Groves and Mary Genevieve Groves; and his wife, Mabel Groves, who died May 1, 1991. Survivors include one stepson, Raymond Preston of Cyrene, MO; two stepdaughters: Margaret Nicholson of Louisiana, MO, and Mildred Turner of Troy, MO. He also leaves two brothers: James Hartford Groves of Hannibal, MO, and Presley Carson Groves of Gold Hill, OR; two sisters: Helen Marie of Lancaster, CA, and Martha Morris of Tucson, AZ; two half-sisters: Ruby McGuire Budd of Elsberry, and Sophie Darlene Stonebraker and her husband, Hick, of Foley, MO; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Visitation was held from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 1, 2003 at Carter-Ricks Funeral Home in Elsberry. Memorials may be made to the Elsberry First Baptist Church or the Elsberry Senior Center in care of Carter-Ricks Funeral Home, 107 South Fifth Street, Elsberry, MO 63343.
