Obituary of Walter David Dickmeyer

Walter D. Dickmeyer, Jr. of Elsberry, Missouri passed away at the age of 85 years, five months and eleven days on Friday afternoon, August 29, 2014 at the Elsberry Health Care Center near Elsberry. Born March 18, 1929 in Old Monroe, he was the son of Walter C. and Sophie Unfer Dickmeyer. In 1944 he was confirmed and was a member of St. Paul Church of Christ near Old Monroe. He was a 1947 graduate of Winfield High School where he participated in all the sports. He was united in marriage on April 13, 1956 in Winfield, MO to Shirley Haynes. Walter "Jr." was employed for 25 years as a farm equipment mechanic at Galloway Implement in Old Monroe. He later worked at Kem-Mar and Amber Courts. In his early years, he drove stock cars. The outdoors was a big part of his life and he enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. He was a member of the National Wildlife Federation, Ducks Unlimited and the Missouri Sheriff's Association. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Sophie Dickmeyer; three brothers, Wendell Dickmeyer, Wilbert Dickmeyer and Robert Dickmeyer; and one sister, Ruth Dickmeyer. Survivors include his beloved wife of 58 years, Shirley Dickmeyer of Elsberry; a sister, Naomi Sommer of Old Monroe; and his sister-in-law, Millie Dickmeyer of Easton, PA. He also leaves six nephews: Rich Dickmeyer, Jim Dickmeyer, Tom Dickmeyer, Nathan Dickmeyer, Dan Sommer and Sam Sommer; one niece, Connie Dickmeyer; several other relatives and many friends. It was Walter's wish to be cremated and have no funeral services. Memorials may be made to the National Wildlife Federation in care of Carter-Ricks Funeral Home, 107 S. 5th Street; Elsberry, MO 63343.
