Obituary of Arthur William Hammel

Arthur William Hammel Funeral services for Arthur William Hammel of Troy, MO, formerly of Elsberry, MO will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, June 14, 2010 at Carter-Ricks Funeral Home in Elsberry. Rev. Richard Turnbull, of Winfield, will officiate. Serving as pallbearers will be Matthew Brunnert, Joshua Birkhead, Carl Terrill, Eddie Shaw, Eric Mooney and Arthur Russell Hammel. Honorary pallbearers will be Joseph Birkhead, Greg Horst and John Brunnert. Mr. Hammel, 84, passed away late Thursday evening, June 10, 2010 at Lincoln County Nursing and Rehab in Troy, MO. Born March 31, 1926 in St. Louis, MO, he was the son of Arthur W., Sr. and Wilhelmina D. Schiftman Hammel. He served his country during World War II in the United States Navy from September 11, 1943 until being honorably discharged on March 22, 1946. He was united in marriage on July 29, 1947 in Mayfield, KY to Vivian Luceil Ferguson. This union was blessed with three children: Susan, Linda and Phillip. He worked for Ford for several years. He, along with his wife and family, bought Timberlake Marina in 1959 and moved to Elsberry in 1960. He owned and operated the marina until retiring in 1989. He was a member of the American Legion Post #226 and the VFW Post #9064 in Elsberry. He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur W. Hammel, Sr. and Wilhelmina Dennis and his son, Phillip Hammel, who passed away in 1997. Survivors include his beloved wife of 62 years and 11 months, Vivian Hammel of Troy; two daughters: Susan Horst and her husband, Greg, of Troy, and Linda Birkhead and her husband, Joseph, of Perry, MO; his former daughter-in-law, Shellie Hammel Simmons of Eolia; six grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and five step-great grandchilren. He also leaves two brothers: Robert Hammel and his wife, Joann, of New Melle, MO and Edward Hammel of Dutzow, MO; one sister, Grace Kunz of Florissant, MO; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Visitation will be held from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. Sunday, June 13, 2010 at Carter-Ricks Funeral Home in Elsberry.
