Hazel Marie Nichols Cannon, born April 21, 1916, was the oldest of three children born to Tully Dee and Delphia Irvin Nichols. She was born at the family farm near Winfield, Missouri. One younger brother born in 1921 died in infancy. In December of 1925, another brother, Ray Marvin, died at the age of two years. Mrs. Cannon, 94, passed away Tuesday evening, May 11, 2010 at The Baptist Home in Ironton, Missouri. She was a 1934 graduate of Winfield High School. At the age of fourteen, she was approached and offered a position as an Avon representative. She accepted and continued working for Avon until her high school graduation. After graduation, she went to work at Ricks General Store in Winfield, Missouri. She was united in marriage on July 26, 1934 to Walter Edmond Cannon. After working several years, she and Walter were blessed with two sons: Dennis and Bruce. She had planned to stay home and raise their family, but by this time, they had a well established farm life. However, it only lasted a short time until Walter was stricken with a massive heart attack in 1959 and passed away in February of 1961. Hazel was left with two small sons to raise herself. She chose to still stay home to raise her family and manage the farm until both sons were out of college. Once her sons were out of college, she worked part-time for many years for the Lincoln County Assessor's office. She worked as a supervisory judge at county elections. When she retired from farming, she was offered and accepted a position as an Enumerator Field Representative of Missouri Agricultural Statistics Office in cooperation with the United States Department of Agriculture. She held this position for twenty-five years and retired with many certificates of honor. Mrs. Cannon was a member of the Winfield Baptist Church since 1927. She was a fifty year plus member of the Order of Eastern Star (original Winfield Chapter 294, later Troy Chapter 405). She was also a member of the Missouri Century Farm Club since 1986, Lincoln County Farm Bureau, and Missouri Auto Club since 1949. She received the preservation award from the Lincoln County Historical Society for the restoration of a century old farm house in 2000. She was a member of the Smithsonian Institution, National Geographic and National Trust Historic Preservation. She was preceded in death by her parents, Tully and Delphia Irvin Nichols; two younger brothers; one son, Bruce Lynn Cannon in 2008; and her beloved husband of 26 years, Walter Cannon. Survivors include one son: Dennis Lee Cannon and his wife, Barbara, of Houston, TX; four grandchildren: Brock Cannon of Denver, CO, Brady Cannon of Missoula, MT, Brittany Marie Fravell and her husband, Shannon, of Winfield, and Taylor DeWayne Cannon of O'Fallon, MO; one great-granddaughter, Hailee Fravell; several cousins, other relatives and many close friends. Visitation will be held Friday, May 14, 2010 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Carter-Ricks Funeral Home near Winfield.
