Obituary of Leslie Owen Whiteside

Leslie Owen Whiteside Funeral services for Leslie Owen Whiteside of Elsberry, MO will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 11, 2010 at New Hope Baptist Church near Elsberry. Rev. John Zellmer, church pastor, will officiate with music provided by Jim Mayes and Bill Berneking. Burial will be in Elsberry City Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Bennie Teasley, Ed Deters, Jim Deters, Jim Mayes, Jim Johnson and Frankie Teasley; and honorary pallbearers will be Ken Cross, Charlie Gladney, Forrest Gladney and Ronnie Mayes. Mr. Whiteside, 69, passed away early Saturday morning, May 8, 2010 at his home near Elsberry. Born December 8, 1940 on the family farm near Elsberry, he was the son of Owen Edward and Lucille Marie Hearn Whiteside. He was a 1958 graduate of Elsberry High School. He was united in marriage on June 18, 1994 in Hawk Point, MO to Linda Marie Deters. He farmed in northeastern Lincoln County for many years. He served the communities of Lincoln County as a police officer in Elsberry and Troy, and as a Sheriff's Deputy for the Lincoln County Sheriff's Department. In recent years, he was employed by 47 West Trailer Sales & Service near Troy, retiring in the spring of 2009. He was a member of the Lincoln County Old Threshers Association and the Vintage Machinery Club in Pike and Lincoln Counties. He was a long-time member of the New Hope Baptist Church near Elsberry. He was preceded in death by his father, Owen E. Whiteside; and an infant brother who died at birth. Survivors include his beloved wife of almost 16 years, Linda Whiteside of Elsberry; three children: Lesa Ellen Cohea and her husband, Bill, of Elsberry, Leslie DeWayne Whiteside and his wife, Pat, of Elsberry, and Darrel Eugene Whiteside and his wife, Meredith, of Elsberry; their mother, Barbara Luck Norvel of Elsberry; one step-daughter, Jenifer Stevens of Marshall, MO; two grandchildren: Alicia Ellen Cohea and Duncan Alexander Whiteside; three step-grandchildren: Adam and Andrew Cohea, and Lori Simpson and her husband, Charlie; and five step-great-grandchildren: Chaz, Michael, Cameron, Wyatt and Sophia Simpson. He also leaves his mother, Lucille Whiteside of Elsberry; two brothers-in-law: Jim Deters and his wife, Karen, of Bowling Green, MO, and Ed Deters and his wife, Lisa, of O'Fallon, MO; two sisters-in-law: Kathy Brown and her husband, Bob, of Centralia, MO, and Fran Boyd of Bowling Green; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. Visitation will be held from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. Monday, May 10, 2010 at Carter-Ricks Funeral Home in Elsberry.
