Funeral Services for James "Jimmy" Wayne Stewart of Elsberry, MO will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, February 4, 2010 at Carter-Ricks Funeral Home in Elsberry. Rev. Bob Norvel, pastor of the Annada Christian Church, will officiate with burial in the Elsberry City Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Garry Wayne Stewart, Sara Manion, Lisa Evans, Angie Jett, Todd Collins, and Bill Blakey; honorary pallbearers will be Don and Helen Mirick, Linda Blakey, Robert "Bob" and LaVerne Wright, Larry and Joyce Wright, Wendy Wright, Grant and Cecelia Hemphill, Craig Hemphill, Brad Hemphill, and Stan and Jane Hemphill.
Mr. Stewart, 87, passed away Saturday morning, January 30, 2010 at his home near Elsberry. Born June 2, 1922 on the home farm near Annada, MO, he was the son of Alfred Wayne and Edith Branham Stewart. He attended Annada and Paynesville Schools, and worked several jobs until he was drafted into the U.S. Army on November 9, 1942. He served in the European Theater as a member of C Battery 195 anti-aircraft artillery BN 2nd Armored Division. He landed on Normandy Beach D-Day+7 and participated in the St. Lo Breakout and the Battle of the Bulge. He worked with displaced persons at the end of the War before being honorably discharged on December 5, 1945.
He was united in marriage on January 18, 1946 in Elsberry to Trula Lee Hemphill. This union was blessed with two sons, James Keith and Garry Lee. Jimmy farmed and hauled livestock most of his life. After retirement, he drove a school bus for the Elsberry Schools. Involved in his community, he served for six years on the Elsberry Special Road District, and was a member of the Elsberry Volunteer Fire Protection District Board for many years. He was a member of the Annada Christian Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Edith Stewart.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 64 years, Trula Lee Stewart of Elsberry; two sons: James Keith Stewart of Elsberry, and Garry L. Stewart and his wife, Pam, of Elsberry; two grandchildren: Sara L. Manion of Platte City, MO and her children, Kristen, Emily and Carter, and Garry W. Stewart and his wife, Roberta, of Lawrence, KS and their son, Noah; three step-grandchildren: Lisa Evans and her husband, John, of Elsberry and their son, Chris, Angie Jett of Troy, MO and her children, Mandy, Brandy and Jessica, and Todd Collins and his wife, Lenae, of O'Fallon, MO and their children, Kayla and Breanna. He also leaves one brother, Joe Stewart and his wife, Margie, of Wheatland, CA; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 3, 2010 at Carter-Ricks Funeral Home in Elsberry.
