Obituary of Carolyn Sue Vanzant

A Mass of Christian Burial for Carolyn Sue Vanzant of Elsberry, MO will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 16, 2014 at Sacred Hearth Catholic Church in Elsberry. Fr. Charles Tichacek, church pastor, will officiate with burial in New Hope Cemetery near Elsberry. Serving as pallbearers will be Tony Vanzant, Bart Mersch, Corbin Marchack, Rodney Bross, Mark Bross and Dale Hurley. Mrs. Vanzant, 70, passed away Sunday afternoon, July 13, 2014 at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Peters, MO. Born December 16, 1943 in Quincy, IL, she was the daughter of Lawrence and Viola Younk Johnson. She graduated from Bethel High School. Carolyn was united in marriage on June 24, 1961 in Shelbina, MO to Harry Ellis Vanzant. This union was blessed with four children: Tony, Anika, Crystal and Patricia. She loved spending time with family, dancing, bowling and playing cards. She was a former member of D.O.M. Club and participated with Meals on Wheels. Carolyn worked as a Teller for the Bank of Lincoln County from 1980-1995. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She was preceded in death by her mother, Viola Thrasher; her stepfather, Vernon Thrasher; and one granddaughter, Christy. Survivors include her beloved husband of 53 years, Harry Vanzant of Elsberry; one son: Tony Vanzant and his wife, Lori, of Troy, MO; three daughters: Anika Olson of Denver, CO, Crystal Mersch and her husband, Bart, of Troy and Patricia Marchack and her husband, Corbin, of Columbia, MO; and eight grandchildren: Kayla, Kelsey, Courtney, Mackenzie, Jake, Keely, Clayton and Dominic. She also leaves her father, Lawrence Johnson of Palmyra; one sister, Betty Bross of Palmyra; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and many, many friends. Visitation will be held from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 15, 2014 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church and again on Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of Mass. Memorials may be made to St. Louis Ovarian Cancer Awareness in care of Carter-Ricks Funeral Home, 107 S. 5th Street; Elsberry, MO 63343.
