Obituary of John C. Smith

John C. Smith, Jr. Funeral Services for John Cornelius Smith, Jr. of Elsberry, MO will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, March 13, 2009 at Carter-Ricks Funeral Home in Elsberry. Rev. Tom Schofield, pastor of the Elsberry First Christian Church, will officiate with burial in the Elsberry City Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Blake Wilson, Bryan Wilson, Michael Mayes, Joe Smith, Steve Smith and Rusty Kinion; honorary pallbearers will be Sammy Mayes, Emil Hoechst, Tommy Hunter and Tony "Dick" Clarkson. Mr. Smith, 80, died Tuesday morning, March 10, 2009 at his home in Elsberry. Born October 11, 1928 in Quincy, IL, he was the son of John Cornelius and Gladys Hoskins Smith, Sr. Raised in Hannibal, MO, he was a 1947 graduate of Hannibal High School. He attended William Jewel College in Liberty, MO. He was united in marriage on December 13, 1953 in Hannibal to Marjorie Elizabeth Baker. This union was blessed with three children, Greg, Kim and Lisa. He was employed as a Bank Examiner for several years before he moved his family to Elsberry. He worked for many years as the Executive Vice-President at the Bank of Lincoln County in Elsberry, retiring in January, 2006. He was preceded in death by his parents, John, Sr. and Gladys Smith. Survivors include his beloved wife of 55 years, Marjorie Smith of Elsberry; one son, Greg Smith and his wife, Debbie, of Elsberry; two daughters: Kim Wilson and her husband, Brent "Doc", of Elsberry, and Lisa Mayes and her husband, Dick, also of Elsberry; six grandchildren: Blake Wilson and his wife, Julie, Bryan Wilson, Beth Mayes, Michael Mayes, Sarah Smith and Joe Smith; and two great-grandchildren, Evan and Nolan Wilson. He also leaves one brother, Dale "Toby" Smith of Pittsfield, IL; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Visitation will be held from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. Thursday, March 12, 2009 at Carter-Ricks Funeral Home in Elsberry.
