Born September 23, 1916 in rural Winfield, Lauretta was the daughter of Clarence and Nettie Argent Terrell. She attended school in the Winfield and Troy area, and graduated Salutatorian with the Winfield High School Class of 1934. Lauretta always wanted to be a teacher and received a scholarship to Hannibal LaGrange College. Since it was the Depression, she wasn't able to use her scholarship and started working at the Winfield Post Office. There she met her future husband, James Farrell "Sam" Scroggin who was in town from Arkansas, to help build Lock & Dam #25. Lauretta and Sam were united in marriage on April 10, 1937 in Troy, MO. This union was blessed with three children: James Farrell, Jr. "Jim", Diedri Faith and Barry Bruce. Lauretta was active in both the Winfield and Foley Baptist Churches. She taught Sunday School to preschoolers for over 50 years. Through Women's Mission Union she taught "Sunbeams" and "Mission Friends", and also helped with GA's. She worked in Vacation Bible Schools and was a cook for over 10 years at the Baptist Associational Camps in Cuivre River State Park. She was an avid supporter of missions and helping others. Besides church work, she was a volunteer in many community organizations including: the Lincoln County Hospital Auxiliary, Band Boosters, PTA, Scouts and Winco. During her lifetime she had many occupations. She took the 1960 Census and she was the news correspondent for the Hannibal Courier Post, Elsberry Democrat, Troy Free Press and KWRE Radio. She also was the babysitter for many area children. At home, Lauretta worked hard at preparing produce from the garden. All summer she canned and froze vegetables and friends and prepared jams, jellies and juices. After getting her own children through school, she continued to use her desire to teach by tutoring many neighborhood children, and listening to children read at the Winfield Elementary School. She also helped teachers by attending many field trips. Lauretta loved to travel and visited all 50 states as well as over 65 countries. She toured every continent but Antarctica. She was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Nettie Terrell; her younger brother, Rodney "Bud" Terrell and his wife, Eileen Fielder Terrell; Sam's five brothers and five sisters and their spouses; and her beloved husband of 64 years, Sam Scroggin, Sr. who died June 30, 2001. Survivors include three children: her son, Jim Scroggin, Jr. and his wife, Becky, of Nokesville, VA, and their children: Troy (Karen) Scroggin, Todd (Ann) Scroggin and Tina (Brian) Clements; her daughter, Diedri Herring and her husband, John L., of Foley, and their children: Lezlie (Ken) Grey, Quay (Kenny) Pund, and Brea (Damon) Bounds; and her son, Barry B.
