Obituary of Josephine G. Vehige

A Mass of Christian Burial for Josephine Gertrude Vehige of Old Monroe, MO, will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, August 25, 2007 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church near Old Monroe. Msgr. Gregory Schmidt, church pastor, will officiate with burial in Immaculate Conception Cemetery near Old Monroe. Serving as pallbearers will be Paula Goodman, Susan Spalitto, Jon Moxley, Carl Wilmes, Jacob Vehige and Ed Vehige. Mrs. Vehige, 89, died Tuesday afternoon, August 21, 2007 at Delmar Gardens of Creve Coeur in Creve Coeur, MO. Born August 19, 1918 in Old Monroe, she was the daughter of Frank S. and Agatha Mennemeyer Burkemper. She was united in marriage on September 28, 1937 in Old Monroe to Alex Joseph Vehige. This union was blessed with five children: Betty, Geri, Rich, Dotty and Joe. She was a lifelong and faithful member of Immaculate Conception Church and the Altar Society near Old Monroe. Mrs. Vehige enjoyed bowling, cards and gardening. She was a member of the Blitz Card Club in Old Monroe and the Old Monroe Lions Club. She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Agatha Burkemper; eleven brothers: Richard Burkemper, Matthew Burkemper (who died as an infant), Adolph Burkemper, Gilbert Burkemper, Stephen Burkemper, Lambert Burkemper, Bernard Burkemper, Frank Burkemper, Lester Burkemper, Hilary Burkemper and Dennis Burkemper; three sisters: Delephine McMenamy, Helen Prinster and Mary Solome Burkemper; one grandson, Joseph William Vehige; and one great-grandson, Alexander Joseph Wilmes. Survivors include her beloved husband of almost 70 years, Alex Vehige of Old Monroe; two sons: Richard Vehige and his wife, Carolyn, of Town & Country, MO, and Joe Vehige and his wife, Jeanine, of St. Charles, MO; three daughters: Betty Ziegemeier and her husband, Jack, of St. Paul, MO, Geri Wilmes and her husband, Gene, of Josephville, MO, and Dotty Moxley and her husband, Don, of St. Charles; 24 grandchildren, 57 great-grandchildren and eleven great, great-grandchildren. She also leaves one sister, Ann Schipper of Troy; two sisters-in-law: Margie Burkemper of O'Fallon, MO, and Wilma Burkemper of Troy; 51 nieces & nephews, several cousins, other relatives and many friends. Visitation will be held from 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Friday, August 24, 2007 at Carter-Ricks Funeral Home near Winfield. A Prayer Services will be held at 7:30 p.m. during the visitation at the funeral home. Visitation will continue from 8:30 a.m. until time of the service at Immaculate Conception Church.
