Obituary of Gertrude Vashti Cady

Mrs. Gertrude Vashti Cady, 78, of Elsberry, MO was born on September 20, 1945 in Detroit, MI, the daughter of George and Magaline Atkins Scyler. She passed away Monday night, June 17, 2024 at her home. Gertrude was a graduate of Divine Child in Detroit. She went on to serve with VISTA (Volunteers in Service of America). Gertrude attended Wayne State University in Detroit and Western Iowa Tech in Sioux City, IA for her nursing degree. Gertrude was united in marriage on December 22, 1966 in Valentine, NE to Dennis Owen Cady. This union was blessed with two children: Sarah and Matthew. Gertrude worked as a Licensed Practical Nurse for Winnebago Indian Health Service, retiring in 2007. She was the former President of St. Nicolas Alter Society in Valentine and served on the Nebraska State Committee of Girl Scouts. Gertrude was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Walthill, NE and Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Elsberry. She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Magaline Scyler; her sister, Mary Berry; and her son, Matthew Cady, who died in 2001. Survivors include her beloved husband of 57 years, Dennis Cady of Elsberry; their daughter, Sarah Cady and her husband, Anthony Lichty, of St. Charles, MO; and three grandchildren: Eleanor, Miriam and Cassandra Lichty. Gertrude also leaves her brother-in-law, Raymond Berry of Mokina, IL; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Per Gertrude’s request, there are no services scheduled.
