Obituary of Elmer A. Gnade

Elmer "John" Gnade A Mass of Christian Burial for Elmer Anthony "John" Gnade of Old Monroe, MO was celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Monday, May 28, 2007 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church near Old Monroe. Msgr. Gregory Schmidt, church pastor, officiated with burial in Immaculate Conception Catholic Cemetery near Old Monroe. Serving as pallbearers were his grandsons: Marc Gnade, David Gnade, Chris Gnade, Andy Gnade, Dan Herbert and Scott Herbert. Mr. Gnade, 93, died Friday afternoon, May 25, 2007 at Troy Manor in Troy, MO. Born November 18, 1913 near Old Monroe, he was the son of Herman and Rose Freise Gnade. He served his country during World War II in the U.S. Army from 1941 until 1945. He was united in marriage on January 6, 1945 in Old Monroe to Lorraine Frances Burkemper. This union was blessed with four children: Ronald, Russell, Kenneth and Linda. He owned and operated the Crown Service Station in Old Monroe for many, many years, retiring in his early eighties. He was a lifelong member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church near Old Monroe, and was active in the Men's Sodality in his younger years. He was also a member of the American Legion Post #420 in Old Monroe. He was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Rose Gnade; two brothers: one who died in infancy and Richard Gnade who died as a young child; and his beloved wife of 43 years, Lorraine Gnade, who died January 14, 1988. Survivors include his children: Ronald Gnade and his wife, Janet of O'Fallon, MO, Russell Gnade and his wife, Kathy, Old Monroe, Kenneth Gnade and his wife, Linda, of Old Monroe, and Linda Herbert and her husband, Ed, also of Old Monroe; eleven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He also leaves five brothers: Gene Gnade and his wife, Laura, of Calmar, IA, Jim Gnade of Old Monroe, Charlie Gnade and his wife, Dorothy, of Old Monroe, Bill Gnade and his wife, Dolores, of Moscow Mills, MO, and Ben Gnade and his wife, Ruthie, of Moscow Mills; five sisters: Adele Anthony of Old Monroe, Ann Hank of Montgomery City, MO, Leona Schneider of St. Peters, MO, Rosemary Rottger and her husband, Everett, of Troy, and Jane Pieper and her husband, Leonard, of Troy; several nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and a host of friends. Visitation was held from 3:00 - 8:00 p.m. Sunday, May 27, 2007 at Carter-Ricks Funeral Home near Winfield, MO. A Prayer Service and an American Legion Memorial Service will be held during the visitation at the funeral home.
