Obituary of Richard D. Cowan
Funeral Mass with Full Military Honors for Richard D. Cowan of Old Monroe, MO will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 2, 2022 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church near Old Monroe. Fr. Richard Rath, church pastor, will officiate. Graveside Services will be held at a later date at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, MO.
Mr. Cowan, 82, passed away Thursday night, August 25, 2022 at SSM St. Louis University in St. Louis. Born February 7, 1940 in Portageville, MO, he was the son of Virgil Nolan and Rosa Marie Robison Cowan. Richard served his country in the United States Army from July 20, 1961 until his honorable discharge on July 19, 1963. He was united in marriage on April 11, 1964 in St. Louis to Irene Frances Thoene. This union was blessed with three children: Francine, Richard J. and Ronald. Richard worked in machine repair for McDonnell Douglas and later Boeing, retiring in 2002. He was an avid bowler and former member of the Old Monroe Lions Club. Richard was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Virgil and Rosa Cowan; four brothers: Virgil Lee, Grover, Robert and Delmer Cowan; and one sister, Ruby Ann Bryant.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 58 years, Irene Cowan of Old Monroe; their children: Francine Nipper and her husband, Scott, of Surprise, AZ, Richard J. Cowan and his wife, Tina, of Wentzville, MO and Ronald Cowan and his wife, Cathy, of St. Charles, MO; eight grandchildren: Sean, Julie, Chelsea, Miranda, Ashley, Haley, Damon and Sydney; one great-granddaughter, Murphy, and another on the way. Richard also leaves six brothers: Chester Cowan and his wife, Joyce, Clarence Cowan and his wife, Cindy, Johnny Cowan and his wife, Linda, Charles Cowan and his wife, Julie, Gregory Cowan and David Eric Cowan; five sisters: Vivian Moore and her husband, Jim, Virginia Baker, Debra Hooper, Barbra Nichols and her husband, Mike, and Lois Gregory and her husband, Terry; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 2, 2022 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.
