Obituary of Vera Placker

Vera Placker Funeral Services for Vera Placker of Elsberry, MO will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, August 19, 2021 at Carter-Ricks Funeral Home in Elsberry. Rev. Conrad Cheatham, pastor of the Elsberry ARPresbyterian Church and Mt. Zion ARPresbyterian Church, and Rev. Sam Byers, pastor of Elsberry First Baptist Church, will officiate with burial in Elsberry City Cemetery in Elsberry, MO. Serving as pallbearers will be Rick Heitman, Michael Broyles, Scott Black, Doran Black, Dave Housewright and Ronnie Vaughn. Honorary pallbearers will be Emma Housewright, Madelyn Housewright, Alexandria Black, Alaina Black and Elliana Black. Mrs. Placker, 99, passed away Monday morning, August 16, 2021, at the Elsberry Health Care Center near Elsberry. Born January 25, 1922 in Washington Park, IL, she was the daughter of William Hugh and Tina Yeast Broyles. Vera was united in marriage to John Samuel Wells. This union was blessed with one daughter, Carolyn. Vera was later married to James Leggett Placker. She was a loving housewife. Vera was a member of the Jesse Black Club and Garden Club. Vera was a member of Mt. Zion ARPresbyterian Church where she served on the Mt. Zion Missionary Society. She joined the church November 18, 1942 and was proud to be the oldest church member. Vera enjoyed gardening, taking care of her flowers and taking care of her chickens. She had an egg delivery route, which she always enjoyed visiting with her customers. Vera was not only Carolyn’s mother, but her best friend. They were great shopping partners and she helped Carolyn with all her canning and sewing projects. She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Tina Broyles; two brothers: Cecil Broyles and Howard Broyles; one great grandson, Steven Chase Black; her first husband, John Wells; and her second husband, James Placker. Survivors include her daughter, Carolyn Black and her husband, Larry, of Elsberry; three grandchildren: Christina Housewright and her husband, Dave, Doran Black and his wife, Gen, and Scott Black and his wife, Erin; six great-grandchildren: Grant Black, Emma Housewright, Madelyn Housewright, Alexandria Black, Alaina Black and Elliana Black; and one great, great-granddaughter, Brooklyn Black. Vera also leaves one brother, Donald W. Broyles and his wife, Jenny, of St. Charles, MO; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Thursday, August 19, 2021 at Carter-Ricks Funeral Home in Elsberry.
