Obituary of Shirley Burkemper

A Mass of Christian Burial for M. Shirley Burkemper of Moscow Mills, MO will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, June 25, 2020 at Immaculate Conception Church near Old Monroe, MO. Father Richard Rath, church pastor, will officiate with burial in Immaculate Conception Cemetery near Old Monroe. Serving as pallbearers will be Randy Thornhill, Jared Cattoor, Jason Todd, Roy Freise, David Reller and Jeff Reller. Mrs. Burkemper, 92, passed away Monday afternoon, June 22, 2020 at Abby Senior Health in O’Fallon, MO. Born February 7, 1928 in Troy, MO, she was the daughter of Oren Smith and Frances Joann Brown Carter. Shirley was a 1946 graduate of Troy High School. She was united in marriage on October 26, 1949 in Troy to Ernest John Burkemper. This union was blessed with two daughters, Phyllis and Jane. Shirley was a loving and devoted mother and homemaker. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Church near Old Monroe. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, Oren Carter and Frances Hopkins; two sisters: Barbara Jo Carter who died as an infant, and Julia Ann “Judy” Beckman; one brother, William “Bill” Hopkins; and her beloved husband of almost 54 years, Ernest Burkemper, who died September 10, 2003. Survivors include her daughters: Phyllis Ann Thornhill and her husband, Glenn, of Moscow Mills, and Jane Patcha and her husband, Jim, of Pacific, MO; four grandchildren: Ellen Todd and her husband, Jason, of Aurora, CO, Randy Thornhill of Old Monroe, Bree Cattoor of St. Louis, MO and Jared Cattoor and his wife, Anna, of St. Louis; and one great-grandson, Bogdan Jade Cattoor. Shirley also leaves two sisters-in-law, Alvera Roettger of Troy, MO and Viola Kientzy of Silex, MO; several nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends. Visitation will be held from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 24, 2020 at Carter-Ricks Funeral Home in Winfield, MO. **Social distancing and face masks are requested.** Memorials may be made to Immaculate Conception Church in care of Carter-Ricks Funeral Home, 3838 East Highway 47, P.O.
