Mayes of Elsberry, MO were held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, January 19, 2006 at New Hope Baptist Church near Elsberry. Rev. Clay Boley of Cyrene Baptist Church and Rev. Barry Lagg of New Hope Baptist Church officiated with burial in New Hope Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were David Mayes, Greg Gatson, Sammy Mayes, Dick Mayes, Leslie Whiteside and DeWayne Whiteside. Mrs. Mayes, 86, passed away Tuesday morning, January 17, 2006 at Lincoln County Medical Center in Troy, MO. Born August 7, 1919 in New Hope, MO (near Elsberry), she was the daughter of the late Jacob and Inez Galloway Whiteside. She was a 1936 graduate of Elsberry High School. She was united in marriage on July 30, 1938 in Elsberry to John William Mayes. This union was blessed with two sons: James and Ronald. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Mayes was the President of Women's Missionary Union (WMU) for many years. She was active in local WMU in Cuivre Baptist Association and Missouri State Baptist Convention. She was also the Treasurer of Cuivre Baptist Camp for more than 40 years and a Missouri State Baptist Convention Executive Board Member for 6 years. Mrs. Mayes was a member of the Jesse Black Club and the New Hope Baptist Church near Elsberry. Besides her parents, Jacob and Inez Whiteside, she was preceded in death by one sister, Helen Bartee who died October 18, 2002. Survivors include her beloved husband of almost 68 years, John William Mayes; two sons: James Mayes and his wife, Louise, of Elsberry and Ronnie Mayes of Elsberry; three grandchildren: Linda Stone and her husband, Allen, of Lawrenceville, GA, Jennifer Gatson and her husband, Greg, of Vandalia, MO and David Mayes of Hawk Point, MO. She also leaves one foster granddaughter, Melissa Rhodes of Elsberry; four great-grandchildren and two foster great-grandchildren, other relatives and many friends. Visitation was held from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 18, 2006 at Carter-Ricks Funeral Home in Elsberry.
