Obituary of Velma Marshall Sanders

Funeral Services for Velma Marshall Sanders of Elsberry, MO, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, January 24, 2013 at the First Christian Church in Elsberry. Rev. John Zellmer, pastor of New Hope Baptist Church near Elsberry, will officiate with burial in Elsberry City Cemetery. Mrs. Sanders, 95, passed away Sunday afternoon, January 20, 2013 at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Peters, MO. Born March 23, 1917 in Lincoln County, MO, she was the daughter of Alton P. and Gertie Parks Davis. She graduated from high school in Paynesville, MO and attended Kirksville State Teachers College for one year. She worked as an elementary school teacher at Star Hope, Hayes and White Swan Schools where she also attended as a child. She was united in marriage on November 30, 1938 in Elsberry to Harry Robert Sanders, Jr. This union was blessed with one daughter, Bobette. Mrs. Sanders was a housewife. She was a 60 year member of P.E.O - Chapter AI, a 65 year member of Troy Chapter of the DAR, various Bridge Clubs around Elsberry and The Garden Club. She was a member and Deacon Emeritus at the First Christian Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Alton and Gertie Davis; one sister, Alene Waddell; one brother, Vernon Davis; and her beloved husband of 43 years, Harry Robert Sanders, Jr. on December 22, 1981. Survivors include her daughter, Bobette Shipman and her husband, Joe, of Elsberry; one nephew, Bob Davis and his wife, Donna, of Elsberry; and one niece, Betty Cohoon and her husband, Charles, also of Elsberry. She also leaves other relatives and friends. Visitation will be held from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 23, 2013 at Carter-Ricks Funeral Home in Elsberry. Memorials may be made to the Ministerial Alliance in care of Carter-Ricks Funeral Home; 107 S. 5th Street; Elsberry, MO 63343.
