Obituary of Charles Sidney Gladney

Funeral services for Charles Sidney Gladney of Foley, MO will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, February 26, 2013 at Carter-Ricks Funeral Home in Elsberry. Rev. Conrad Cheatham, pastor of the Elsberry ARPresbyterian Church, will officiate with inurnment in Valhalla Mausoleum in St. Louis, MO. Mr. Gladney, 85, passed away Friday morning, February 22, 2013 at his home near Foley. Born August 16, 1927 in Briscoe, MO, he was the oldest child of Clarence Sidney and Ima Grace Barrett Gladney. A lifelong resident of Lincoln County, he was a 1945 graduate of Elsberry High School. He served his country during World War II in the U.S. Army from November 20, 1945 until he was honorably discharged on December 28, 1946. He was united in marriage on May 21, 1948 in Foley, MO to Bettye Sue Galloway. This union was blessed with four daughters: Sydney, Terry, Carla and Sandra. He was employed for many years in railroad construction as a mechanic for Merit Railroad. He was a member of the Hoisting Engineers, Local #513 in St. Louis, MO. Mr. Gladney was a 50-year member of the New Hope Lodge #199 AF&AM in Elsberry; a member of the Scottish Rite, Valley of St. Louis and the NEMO Scottish Rite Club; a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, currently Chapter #117 in Louisiana, MO; a Charter member of the Lincoln County Old Threshers; and a member of the Vintage Machinery Club in Bowling Green, MO. Charlie enjoyed "tinkering" with old International tractors. He also enjoyed working with the Scottish Rite Kid Talk Program in Elsberry. He was proud to have hosted the "Gladneys in America" in 2012. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, two sisters and his beloved wife of 35 years, Bettye Sue Gladney, who died October 31, 1983. Survivors include his four daughters: Sydney Turner, Terry Burkemper, Carla Clark and Sandra Gladney; many grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. He also leaves one brother, Forrest Gladney and his wife, Hazel, several nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends. Visitation will be held from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. Monday, February 25, 2013 at Carter-Ricks Funeral Home in Elsberry. Memorials may be made to the Elsberry Kid Talk Clinic or the New Hope Lodge Temple Association in care of Carter-Ricks Funeral Home, 107 South Fifth Street, Elsberry, MO 63343.
