Obituary of Marvin "Mike" Powers, Jr.
Marvin “Mike” Powers Jr., 57, retired permanently to the great outdoors of his dreams on January 10, 2026. He passed at home with his beagle dogs by his side and only after his wife fixed Saturday morning biscuits and gravy for breakfast as he’d trained her to do for 16 years.
Mike loved to hunt, fish, run his dogs and stock the freezer with whatever was in season. He never threw anything away because you never knew when you might need something out of one of the fifty-eleven butter dishes full of this, that and the other or the stacks (never piles) of some-day supplies. This habit came in handy during his many years as a maintenance supervisor. Handy to begin with, he was unstoppable with a smart-phone and YouTube video.
Mike tried retirement in 2023 but couldn’t find fishing buddies with as much time to set a line as he had. So even though he loved his wife, he danced around her honey-do list and soon filled up his days with helping his buddies out with their endless projects. His big ol heart had a hard time saying no to anyone in need and it eventually just wore out.
Mike is survived by his wife, Marsha, who still shakes her head every time she sees his collection of flashlights (33 and counting) and stepson Cory; his bluetick beagles Ruby & Rowdy; the Moss family, and a crazy bunch of in-laws, outlaws and friends too numerous to name.
Mike didn’t believe in traditional funerals. He had no desire to go or be somewhere he needed a shirt that still had sleeves or lacked a camo pattern. Instead, after some time has passed, we’ll have a celebration of life where we can tell his favorite loud nasty jokes and the stories he loved to tell.
For now, here’s hoping that he’s floating down a river in the boat of his dreams and setting a line for the largest flatheads a guy could hope for. (And that he hasn’t realized the wife forgot to pack his best pocket knife & favorite pair of pliers.)
