Obituary of Garry Lee Stewart

Funeral Services for Garry Lee Stewart of Elsberry, MO will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, February 19, 2017 at Carter-Ricks Funeral Home in Elsberry. Rev. Paul Garven, pastor of the Elsberry United Methodist Church, Rev. Bob Norvel, pastor of the Annada Community Christian Church in Annada, MO, and Rev. Tom Sullenger, pastor of Grace United Methodist Church in Cape Girardeau, MO will officiate with burial in the Elsberry City Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Wade King, Ronnie Vaughn, Jr., Bill Halley, Craig Hemphill, Larry Wright, Bob Wright, Grant Hemphill and Bill Blakey. Honorary pallbearers will be Harry Patton, Don Mirick, Bob Elstrom and all of Garry’s good friends from the coffee shop. Mr. Stewart, 68, passed away Sunday evening, February 12, 2017 at Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Cleveland, OH. Born December 11, 1948 in Louisiana, MO, he was the son of James Wayne and Trula Lee Hemphill Stewart. A graduate of Elsberry High School, Garry went on to earn his Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Mizzou. Garry was united in marriage on September 6, 1969 in Elsberry to Pamela Kay Sullenger. This union was blessed with two children: Garry Wayne and Sara. Garry served his country in the United States Army from October 21, 1970 until he was honorably discharged on May 8, 1972. He worked as the Vocational Agriculture Teacher, Building and Grounds Supervisor and the Bus Transportation Superintendent for the Lincoln County R-2 School District for many years, retiring in 2001. Garry also taught hunter safety courses for a number of years. In his free time, Garry loved tinkering with tractors, chainsaws, fixing small gas engines and being on the farm. He was a longtime member of the Elsberry United Methodist Church. Garry was preceded in death by his parents, James and Trula Stewart; and his brother, James “Keith” Stewart, who died February 22, 2014. Survivors include his beloved wife of 47 years, Pam Stewart of Elsberry; their son, Garry W. Stewart and his wife, Roberta, of O’Fallon, MO; daughter, Sara Manion of Platte City, MO; and five grandchildren: Kristen, Emily and Carter Manion, and Noah and Scarlett Stewart. Garry also leaves his sister-in-law, Lois Stewart of Elsberry; brother-in-law, Rev. Tom Sullenger and his wife, Candie, of Cape Girardeau; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. Visitation will be held from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. Saturday, February 18, 2017 at Carter-Ricks Funeral Home in Elsberry.
