Obituary of William Eugene Hurt

Funeral Services for William Eugene "Gene, Bill" Hurt of Winfield, MO will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 24, 2015 at Carter-Ricks Funeral Home near Winfield with Glenn Harke officiating. Burial with full military honors will be in Whispering Winds Cemetery near Winfield. Serving as pallbearers will be Bryant Hurt, Zachary Hurt, Jeremy Kraml, Matthew Harke, Skott Milligan and Tom Saunders. Mr. Hurt, 76, passed away peacefully Friday morning, November 20, 2015 at Harry S. Truman Memorial Veterans Hospital in Columbia, MO, surrounded by those he loved. Born September 2, 1939 in Dayton, OH, he was the son of William Earl "Red" and Ruth Lillian Payne Hurt. He attended Sugar Valley School, a one-room school, until the 7-8th grade, and was a 1958 graduate of Greenville High School in Greenville, OH. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Tarkio College in Tarkio, MO. He served his country in the U.S. Air Force from October 6, 1958 until October 5, 1962, and 26 years in the Missouri Air National Guard Reserves. He was united in marriage on August 4, 1961 in Greenville to Deloris Ann McGuire. This union was blessed with two sons, Bill and Rick. Gene's Civil Service employment included 20 years as Air Technician with the Missouri Air National Guard and eight years as Logistics Specialist for the Department of the Army. He retired from the Missouri Air National Guard Reserve in 1988 and Federal Civil Service in 1990. Gene's retirement activities included real estate property development, maintenance and most of all helping other people. He got his fill of travel when working. He enjoyed visiting the Amish communities and Branson. He also enjoyed genealogy, woodworking and building whatever, driving his backhoe and spending time with family. He was a 52-year member of the Masonic Lodge – Lincoln County Lodge #682, AF&AM of Winfield. He was preceded in death by his mother, Ruth Hurt in 1949; his father, William "Red" Hurt in 1982; and one great-granddaughter, Hartlyn Alivia Harke on May 27, 2014. Survivors include his beloved wife of 54 years, Deloris Hurt of Winfield; two sons: William "Bill" Hurt, Jr. and his wife, Gay, of Winfield, and Richard "Rick" Hurt and his wife, Cindy, of Foley, MO; six grandchildren: William "Bryant" Hurt and his wife, Jessica, of Troy, MO, Steven "Cody" Hurt of San Diego, CA, Zachary Hurt of Foley, Krystal Harke and her husband, Matthew, of Winfield, Jeremy Kraml and his wife, Stefanie, of Wentzville, MO, and Craig Kraml of Winfield; and five great-grandchildren: Bailey Hurt, Jase Kraml, Donovan Hurt, William "Hayden" Hurt, and Remy Kraml. He also leaves two sisters: JoAnn Milligan and Eric, of Jamestown, OH, and Carolyn Troutwine and her husband, Ronnie, of Greenville, OH; one brother, Butch Hurt and Eunice, of Murfreesboro, TN; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. Visitation will be held from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. Monday, November 23, 2015 at Carter-Ricks Funeral Home in Winfield. A Masonic Memorial Service will be held at 7:30 p.m. during the visitation at the Funeral Home.
